Writer: Curtis TredwayCurtis Tredway

Spearfishing is more than just catching fish—it’s about skill, patience, and respect for the ocean. If you've ever wanted to get into spearfishing in Sydney, Wollongong, or Shellharbour, or refine your technique to become a more responsible and efficient hunter, then our brand-new one-day spearfishing course is exactly what you’ve been looking for.

At Deep Sensations Freediving, we’ve designed this course to be 100% practical and ocean-based. No classrooms, no boring theory—just real-world spearfishing experience, guided by experienced freedivers and spearfishers.

Why Take a Spearfishing Course?

Spearfishing is one of the most selective and sustainable ways to harvest seafood, but it requires skill, awareness, and ethical decision-making. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who’s been spearfishing for a while but wants to improve, this course will teach you:

  • How to increase your bottom time and move efficiently in the water.

  • The best hunting strategies, stalking techniques, and fish approach methods.

  • How to handle a speargun safely, including loading, aiming, and reloading.

  • The most humane and ethical ways to take and dispatch fish.

  • How to scale, gut, fillet, and store your catch properly.

If you’re spearfishing around Sydney, Wollongong, or Shellharbour, knowing the local legal catch limits, size regulations, and protected species is essential. We cover everything you need to know so you can hunt responsibly and sustainably.

What Makes This Course Unique?

Unlike other spearfishing courses, ours is fully immersive and hands-on, with a focus on real-world learning in the ocean. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • One-Day Intensive Training: Perfect for those who want to fast-track their skills without spending weeks in training.

  • Small Group Size (Max 3 People): Get personalized coaching and plenty of time in the water to refine your skills.

  • 100% Practical – No Classrooms: Learn by doing, with experienced instructors guiding you every step of the way.

  • Focus on Sustainability & Ethics: We teach responsible spearfishing so you can hunt with confidence and respect for marine life.

  • Designed for Sydney, Wollongong & Shellharbour Waters: Learn the best techniques for local conditions, including reading the environment, understanding currents, and selecting the right locations.

If you want to become a more capable, ethical, and skilled spearfisher, this course will give you the foundation you need to spearfish safely and successfully in NSW waters.

What to Expect on the Day

Morning Session – Spearfishing Fundamentals & Target Practice

The day starts with an introductory session in the water, where you’ll get comfortable with your gear, refine your duck diving and finning technique, and learn how to handle a speargun safely. You’ll practice shooting at targets to perfect your aim before heading out for real-world spearfishing.

Afternoon Session – Real-World Spearfishing & Catch Handling

In the second half of the day, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in a real spearfishing setting. You’ll practice stalking fish, taking ethical shots, and handling your catch properly. By the end of the day, you’ll know how to scale, gut, fillet, and store your fish for the best quality seafood.

This is a fully immersive experience, designed to give you confidence in the water and real hunting skills you can use every time you dive.

An Important Message To Our Community

As someone who has spent countless hours beneath the surface—as an underwater photographer, conservationist, and freediver—it has taken time to find a way to introduce a spearfishing course that I feel truly proud of.

For those who know my journey, I started freediving at 14 years old as a young spearo. Over time, I felt a growing sense of guilt about taking fish and eventually, I stopped. But more than a decade later, I’ve found a way to bridge the gap between hunting and conservation, a way to spearfish responsibly, ethically, and with true respect for marine life.

As an influential voice in the local freediving and spearfishing community, I want to lead by example. This course isn’t just about teaching people how to shoot fish—it’s about instilling a deeper respect for the ocean, its ecosystems, and the role we play as hunters.

I want to train a new generation of spearos who:

  • Understand when to take and when to not pull the trigger.

  • Only take what they need and never waste a catch.

  • Know how to make ethical, informed decisions in the water.

  • Prioritise safety—not just for themselves but for their buddies.

This isn’t just a course—it’s a mindset shift, a way to ensure that spearfishing remains sustainable for generations to come. If you’re ready to spearfish with skill, respect, and purpose, I invite you to join one of our spearfishing courses.
